On the road

I'm traveling through northeastern Montana in the coming week, with the goal of visiting 7 farmers markets. Of course I have already discovered a new market, so it might be 8.

The agricultural area around here centers around the Yellowstone River (that is, water), which you see in the photo above, more or less -- it's that white stripe through the middle. You also see the North Dakota Badlands since I was standing in Savage, which is close to the border.

First I had to drive about 6 hours to get to that point. Terry was the only real stop along the way, and although I had been munching on a turkey sandwich and sesame seed blue corn tortilla chips (my favorite travel food), I headed right for the Scoop Shoppe to get a strawberry ice cream cone. Apart from the fact that the building it was scooped in had the rear end of a car sticking out from it, there was nothing special about the ice cream (which was Blue Bunny). But it was refreshing.

Terry is where you can see photos by Evelyn Cameron, an interesting woman who lived in the area in the late 1800s.

There is also a shop called Prairie Unique, where I expected to find the all-too-frequent souvenirs made in China. Instead, I was delighted to browse shelf after shelf of Montana-made products from all over the state.

At the end of the day I was happy to take a walk past a wheat field with some friends in Savage and then fall into bed.

  1. There's always something special about ice cream, even if there's nothing special about it (I believe that's an old Confucious saying.)
